WHAT TO FIX’s Back Story
WTF?!?
The last decade has been filled with more What The F*ck?! moments than I can count…
→ From Facebook failing to reply to our cries for help when its services were clearly fomenting inter-communal violence
→ To Mark Zuckerberg going live on Vox praising his Myanmar detection systems
→ To us calling him out for lying in an open letter (the detection system in question would have been me 🤷♀️)
→ To Mark’s half-hearted apology citing investments in AI
→ To Facebook eventually acknowledging that they had not done enough to prevent the abuse of their services in Myanmar
→ To my ultimate realization that Facebook may have been actively financing (and incentivizing) anti-Rohingya content through its Instant Articles program.
→ To eventually realizing that all other social media companies are rolling out monetization without adequate oversight…
There is plenty to be cynical about… but we have little choice but to go on and try to fix thing.
